2 CONT "To return to Archibald, the second son of Janet and Patrick, he became 
2 CONC the founder of the Westbury branch of the Fletcher family, as I said, his 
2 CONC parents lived at Craighouse, and in about 1839 he took the farm of 
2 CONC Kenuachdrachd, in the north of the island. On 19th October, 1840, he 
2 CONC married Mary, one of the daughters of the Rev. Alexander Kennedy of Jura, 
2 CONC a very well known Minister, who wrote the New Statistical Account for 
2 CONC Jura in 1843. In 1859 Archibald and Mary took Tarbert and Corrienaheira 
2 CONC farms, and lived at Tarbert until 1900, his son, Patrick, being the last 
2 CONC Fletcher to farm here. Archibald also had the farm of Cracaig, which he 
2 CONC kept until 1900, in which year it can be assumed that he died. During his 
2 CONC lifetime the Fletchers gained a wide reputation for sheep farming and 
2 CONC wool production, supplying many foreign buyers, as well as the home 
2 CONC market."

1 NOTE BIOGRAPHY: As can be seen, John's father died when he was barely two 
2 CONC years old and he was brought up in the Gibson family into which his 
2 CONC mother married in 1765. His stepfather, Joseph, died when John was six 
2 CONC and his mother does not seem to have married again. This may account, in 
2 CONC part, for the lack of family history regarding John's Vidal ancestors 
2 CONC and, of course, the destruction of his mother's house in the great storm 
2 CONC of October 1780 (see below) would mean that no written records that she 
2 CONC had concerning the Vidals, survived. 
2 CONT When his mother and stepsisters perished in the devastating hurricane of 
2 CONC October 3rd, 1780, John survived. Differing accounts about that dreadful 
2 CONC night have been handed down - how John saved his first cousin, Elizabeth 
2 CONC Allwood, (a girl he was to marry seven years later) by helping her cling 
2 CONC to a spar when the tidal wave engulfed their house in Savanna la Mar - 
2 CONC how Elizabeth aged nearly six and her two brothers, one aged eleven, the 
2 CONC other four, were saved by their faithful black nurse who, with the help 
2 CONC of another slave, rushed them up to higher ground as the waters rose.

2 CONC he died young, aged about 25. There is a family tradition that, even in 
2 CONC the early years, the Vidals and Allwoods were in partnership as a law 
2 CONC firm but this cannot be confirmed. As a lawyer it is surprising that John 
2 CONC died intestate, presumably, his death was very sudden. Also, it looks as 
2 CONC if he did not leave his wife, Mary, and their young child a secure 
2 CONC financial future, because she very quickly remarried, though that may 
2 CONC have been for reasons other than financial.

2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: Lady Maria Nugent wrote in her Jamaica Journal when commenting 
2 CONC on the state of morals of the Jamaican planters ".....but white men of 
2 CONC all descriptions, married or single, live in a state of licentiousness 
2 CONC with their female slaves....". John seems to have been no exception to 
2 CONC the general rule in this respect; prior to marrying Mary he had two 
2 CONC children by a free mulatto, Sarah Diston. The first of these died young 
2 CONC but the last was born (though not conceived) after he had married Mary 
2 CONC and was given her name. What happened to Sarah Diston after John's 
2 CONC marriage is not known but the in all probability she and her child lived

2 CONC second marriage had only lasted five years before her husband, Joseph 
2 CONC Gibson, died as well and Mary did not marry again. Perhaps Joseph left 
2 CONC sufficient funds to allow her to survive on her own and bring up her 
2 CONC small children. 
2 CONT She and her sister Jane Allwood probably lived close to each other in 
2 CONC Savanna la Mar, if not together. Jane seems to have owned a number of 
2 CONC houses in the town. They and most of the inhabitants of Savanna la Mar, 
2 CONC perished when a hurricane struck the western end of the island of Jamaica 
2 CONC on the 3rd October 1780. A contemporary account of that disaster can be 
2 CONC found in the Supplement to the Royal [Jamaican] Gazette of Saturday 
2 CONC October 14, 1780 where it reports:--

2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: St. Jago de la Vega, Oct. 12 — At Savanna la Mar on the 
2 CONC afternoon of Tuesday the 3d instant, about three clock, the winds began 
2 CONC to blow very hard from the south-east, accompanied with heavy rains, and 
2 CONC by four had acquired such strength as to tear the trees up by the roots, 
2 CONC and strip the houses of their shingles. Between five and six, the sea 
2 CONC began to rise, and continued for near an hour to swell to a most amazing 
2 CONC height, overflowing the ill-fated town of Savanna la Mar, and the low 
2 CONC lands adjacent. From this time until 8 o'clock, the force of winds and 
2 CONC the impetuosity of the waves, overthrew and demolished every house in 
2 CONC that unfortunate place, and buried most of the inhabitants in the ruins. 
2 CONC A little after eight, it began to abate, but nonetheless continued to 
2 CONC blow very hard until midnight, when the winds veered round to the 
2 CONC Westward. — No pen can describe the horrors of the scene which the 
2 CONC morning presented to the sight of the few who survived to lament the fate 
2 CONC of their wretched neighbours; the earth strewed with the mangled bodies 
2 CONC of the dead and dying, some with broken limbs, who, in that situation, 
2 CONC had been tossed about during the storm, and afterwards left on the wet, 
2 CONC naked earth, to languish out the night in agonies, with no hand to help, 
2 CONC or eye to pity them. Humanity recoils at the contemplation of such 
2 CONC unheard of calamities; and every feeling heart must melt at the bare

1 NOTE BIOGRAPHY: Charles is the first Vidal who can be placed in Jamaica from 
2 CONC the surviving Parish Records. There is a family tradition that he was an 
2 CONC attorney at law and that his father was called Stephen and that Stephen 
2 CONC was descended from an unknown Vidal who was the first to settle in 
2 CONC Jamaica. 
2 CONT There seems to be several theories the about the origins of the Vidals in 
2 CONC Jamaica. The first two derive from the fact that there were quite a few 
2 CONC Spanish and Portuguese Vidals around in the 17th century who could have 
2 CONC found their way to Jamaica. Alice Diehl, whose mother was Eliza Mangold 
2 CONC (nâee Vidal -- Dr Charles Lewis Vidal's adopted? daughter), wrote to Julia 
2 CONC Vidal (nâee Espeut) in about 1904 saying that her side of the family 
2 CONC believed that the Vidals were originally Spanish pirates who settled in 
2 CONC Jamaica either prior to the British annexing the island or later. Alice 
2 CONC was a prolific and romantic authoress who, no doubt, fancied the notion 
2 CONC of swashbuckling Spanish forebears but there is no evidence for this 
2 CONC except in the supposedly "Spanish" look of some of the earlier members of 
2 CONC the family. 
2 CONT 
2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: As far as the Portuguese Vidals are concerned there is mention 
2 CONC of there being some Portuguese Jews in Jamaica called Vidal who turned 
2 CONC Christian. This is made in Captain J. H. Lawrence Archer's publication 
2 CONC "Monumental inscriptions of the British West Indies" which says: "... 
2 CONC Amongst the earliest converts from Judaism were the Vidals of Spanish 
2 CONC town and the Israels of St Dorothy." Other sources have been consulted 
2 CONC but there have been no Vidals, or persons with similarly spelt names, to 
2 CONC be found among the Jamaican monumental inscriptions for Jews. 
2 CONT 
2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: The writer is fairly doubtful about these first two theories. 
2 CONC From 1735 (possibly earlier) all the Vidals had very English Christian 
2 CONC names and later seem to have returned to England to be educated or 
2 CONC trained and in some cases to live for most of their lives (viz Dr Charles 
2 CONC Lewis Vidal -1782-1862). It seems unlikely that they would have had such 
2 CONC an affinity for the country had their origins been Spanish or Portuguese. 
2 CONT 
2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: The final theory -- in fact the accepted story for most of the 
2 CONC Vidals who came to England in the 19th century -- was that the first 
2 CONC Vidal to settle in Jamaica went there from England (there were quite a 
2 CONC few Vidals in England at that time -- see IGI) with the expeditionary 
2 CONC force of Penn and Venables who took the island from the Spanish in 1655. 
2 CONC It is said that the officers of that force were granted lands on the 
2 CONC western side of the island (now the parishes of St Elizabeth, 
2 CONC Westmoreland and Hanover) which is where the expeditionary force is said 
2 CONC to have originally landed. Unfortunately, a publication listing all the 
2 CONC land holdings on the Island in about 1675 does not include any of the 
2 CONC western parishes so it is not possible to confirm whether or not the 
2 CONC Vidals had holdings in the then parish of St Elizabeth (St Elizabeth 
2 CONC parish, at that time, covered the whole of the most western end of the 
2 CONC island, which now comprises the parishes of St Elizabeth, Westmoreland 
2 CONC and Hanover).
